Banana Pudding Recipe

A classic, creamy banana pudding that layers vanilla wafers, fresh bananas, and rich vanilla pudding. Perfect for any dessert lover, this recipe is a crowd-pleaser and easy to make!

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups milk
  • 4 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 box vanilla wafers
  • 4 ripe bananas, sliced
  • Whipped cream or meringue (optional, for topping)

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil.
  3. Remove from heat. Gradually whisk about 1 cup of the hot mixture into the egg yolks to temper them, then return the egg mixture to the saucepan.
  4. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring constantly, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  5. In a 2-quart baking dish, layer one-third of the vanilla wafers, one-third of the banana slices, and one-third of the pudding mixture. Repeat layers twice more, ending with pudding on top.
  6. If using meringue, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread meringue over the pudding, sealing it to the edges of the dish.
  7. Bake for about 15 minutes or until the meringue is lightly browned. Alternatively, chill pudding in the refrigerator and serve topped with whipped cream.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving warm, or refrigerate for at least 2 hours to serve chilled. Enjoy!
