Butter Cake Recipe

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 and 1/2 cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk, room temperature


  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch (23x33cm) baking pan or two 9-inch (23cm) round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan(s) and spread it evenly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes for a 9×13 inch pan or 25-30 minutes for round cake pans, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and allow the cake(s) to cool in the pan(s) for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
