  • 1 large cabbage
  • 300g ground pork
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 carrot, finely grated
  • 3-4 shiitake mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional, for thickening sauce)

  1. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place it in a large pot of boiling water. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the leaves are softened. Remove from water and let cool slightly.
  2. While the cabbage is cooling, prepare the filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, cooked rice, grated carrot, chopped mushrooms, minced garlic, chopped green onions, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and beaten egg. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  3. Gently separate the cabbage leaves, being careful not to tear them. Place a spoonful of the filling mixture onto each cabbage leaf, then roll them up tightly, tucking in the sides as you go. Repeat until all the filling is used.
  4. Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down in a large skillet or baking dish. Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are mostly covered.
  5. Cover the skillet or dish with a lid or foil and cook over medium heat for 20-25 minutes, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and tender.
  6. If desired, thicken the sauce by mixing the cornstarch with a little water to create a slurry. Stir the slurry into the cooking liquid and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
  7. Serve the Chinese stuffed cabbage rolls hot, garnished with extra chopped green onions or a sprinkle of sesame seeds, if desired. Enjoy!
