Making the Vanilla Cake Layer:

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Chocolate Ganache:

  1. Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it begins to simmer. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the butter and stir until the mixture is smooth and glossy. Let the ganache cool slightly before using.

Assembling the Cake:

  1. Once both cakes are completely cooled, level the tops if necessary.
  2. Place the chocolate cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a thin layer of ganache on top.
  3. Place the vanilla cake layer on top of the chocolate layer. Pour the remaining ganache over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  4. Let the ganache set before slicing and serving.
