  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Ground nutmeg (optional, for garnish)

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until well beaten.
  3. Gradually add the granulated sugar, whisking continuously until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  4. In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is just about to simmer. Do not let it boil.
  5. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt.
  7. Pour the custard mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large measuring cup or bowl with a spout to ensure a smooth texture.
  8. Divide the mixture evenly among six 6-ounce custard cups or ramekins.
  9. Place the custard cups in a baking dish and fill the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cups, creating a water bath.
  10. Carefully transfer the baking dish to the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the custards are set but still slightly wobbly in the center.
  11. Remove the custard cups from the water bath and let them cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until chilled.
  12. Before serving, you can sprinkle a pinch of ground nutmeg on top for added flavor and a classic touch. Enjoy your classic baked custard!

Note: For an extra-special presentation, you can caramelize sugar on top of the custard before serving. Sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar on top and use a kitchen torch to melt and caramelize the sugar until golden brown.
