Classic French Toast

Classic French Toast Recipe

Classic French Toast is a delightful breakfast dish made with slices of bread soaked in a sweetened egg mixture, then fried to golden perfection. It’s crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and typically served with syrup, fresh fruits, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or any milk of your choice)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional, for extra richness)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • A pinch of salt
  • 8 slices of thick bread (brioche, challah, or Texas toast work best)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for cooking)
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh fruits (for serving)

  1. Prepare the Egg Mixture:
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream (if using), vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, granulated sugar, and salt until well combined.
  1. Soak the Bread:
  • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter to melt.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Allow the bread to soak for a few seconds to absorb the mixture, but do not let it become too soggy.
  1. Cook the French Toast:
  • Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet or griddle. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy. Add more butter to the skillet as needed for additional batches.
  1. Serve:
  • Remove the French toast from the skillet and place on a serving plate.
  • Serve warm, topped with maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and fresh fruits as desired.

  • For extra flavor, you can add a teaspoon of nutmeg to the egg mixture.
  • If you prefer a more custard-like texture, use thicker slices of bread and allow them to soak a bit longer.
  • French toast can be kept warm in an oven set to 200°F (95°C) while you cook remaining batches.

Enjoy your Classic French Toast!
