Classic Salisbury Steak Recipe

Salisbury steak is a timeless comfort food that brings together savory beef patties with a rich mushroom gravy. This recipe offers a simple yet delicious rendition of this classic dish, perfect for a hearty family meal.


For the patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions and shape them into oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the beef patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and begin to brown, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the mushrooms. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onion is translucent.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
  7. Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
  8. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  9. Once the gravy has thickened, return the beef patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top.
  10. Cover the skillet and let the Salisbury steaks simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  11. Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, spooning extra gravy over the top. Enjoy with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes.
