  • For the Cake:

    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
    • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 cup whole milk
    • ½ cup vegetable oil
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 1 cup boiling water
  • For the Chocolate Frosting:
    • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
    • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ½ cup whole milk
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  1. Prepare the Cake:
    1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
    2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
    3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed until well combined.
    4. Reduce the mixer speed to low and carefully add the boiling water to the cake batter. Beat on high speed for about 1 minute to add air to the batter.
    5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    6. Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Chocolate Frosting:
    1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy.
    2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with the milk, beating on low speed until fully incorporated.
    3. Add the vanilla extract and increase the mixer speed to medium-high. Beat for about 2-3 minutes until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  3. Assemble the Cake:
    1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top.
    2. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
    3. Decorate as desired with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.
  4. Serve and Enjoy:
    1. Slice and serve the cake at room temperature. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
