  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
    • In a small saucepan, heat milk and water until warm (not hot).
    • Add the warm milk mixture, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Beat on low speed until combined.
    • Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  2. Knead and Rise:
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Donuts:
    • Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
    • Cut out donut shapes using a donut cutter or two round cutters of different sizes.
    • Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  4. Fry the Donuts:
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
    • Carefully place a few donuts in the hot oil, frying until golden brown on each side, about 1-2 minutes per side.
    • Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Finish and Serve:
    • While still warm, coat the donuts with granulated sugar or dip them in a glaze of your choice.
    • Enjoy your homemade donuts fresh for the best taste!

Happy baking!
