French Cracker Recipe

Deliciously crisp and buttery, these French crackers are perfect for a snack, cheese platter, or as an elegant appetizer base. Enjoy their subtle flavors on their own or paired with your favorite toppings.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh herbs (such as thyme or rosemary), finely chopped (optional)
  • Sea salt for sprinkling

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, sugar, and herbs (if using).
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add Water: Gradually add the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing with a fork until the dough starts to come together. Do not overmix.
  5. Form Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together into a smooth ball. Flatten into a disk.
  6. Roll Out Dough: Roll the dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use a cookie cutter or knife to cut out cracker shapes. Transfer the cutouts to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake: Prick each cracker with a fork to prevent puffing. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  9. Cool: Remove from the oven and let the crackers cool on a wire rack.
  10. Serve: Enjoy the crackers on their own or with your favorite cheese, dips, or spreads.

Bon appétit!
