Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes Recipe

A comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef simmered in a rich gravy, served over creamy mashed potatoes. Perfect for a satisfying weeknight meal.

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk (or more as needed)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt.
  2. Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
  4. Add butter and milk to the potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm.

For the Ground Beef and Gravy:

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil or butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the beef and stir well to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  7. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme (if using). Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-10 minutes.
  8. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

To Serve:

  1. Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.
  2. Top with the ground beef and gravy mixture.
  3. Serve hot, garnished with chopped parsley if desired. Enjoy!
