Homemade Lasagna Recipe

A classic and hearty homemade lasagna recipe perfect for family dinners. Layers of rich meat sauce, creamy ricotta cheese mixture, and gooey melted mozzarella come together to create this beloved Italian dish.


Meat Sauce:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (casings removed)
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (28 ounces each) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cans (6 ounces each) tomato paste
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Cheese Mixture:

  • 1 container (15 ounces) ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley


  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese


Prepare the Meat Sauce:

  1. Cook Meat: In a large pot over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, onion, and garlic until the meat is browned. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Add sugar, basil, fennel seeds, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and parsley.
  3. Simmer: Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Prepare the Cheese Mixture:

  1. Mix Cheese: In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and parsley. Mix until well blended.

Prepare the Noodles:

  1. Cook Noodles: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain noodles and rinse with cold water. Set aside.

Assemble the Lasagna:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Layer: Spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish. Place 3 noodles over the sauce. Spread with one-third of the ricotta cheese mixture. Top with a third of the mozzarella cheese. Spoon 1 1/2 cups meat sauce over mozzarella and sprinkle with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers, and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
