This classic lasagna recipe layers rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and gooey cheese between tender sheets of pasta, creating a comforting and delicious dish perfect for any occasion.


For the Meat Sauce:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans (28 oz each) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
For the Béchamel Sauce:
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk, heated
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For Assembly:
  • 1 package (16 oz) lasagna noodles
  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)


Prepare the Meat Sauce:
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, and onion until the meat is browned and the onion is tender. Drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and red wine (if using).
  4. Season with sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Simmer the sauce on low heat for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the fresh parsley during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
Prepare the Béchamel Sauce:
  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook for 2-3 minutes until lightly golden, forming a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the heated milk, ensuring no lumps form.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  5. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
Cook the Lasagna Noodles:
  1. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and rinse with cold water to prevent sticking. Set aside.
Assemble the Lasagna:
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a medium bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the egg until well combined.
  3. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  4. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  5. Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  6. Top with one-third of the béchamel sauce.
  7. Sprinkle with one-third of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
  8. Repeat the layers (meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, béchamel sauce, cheeses) two more times, ending with a layer of mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  9. Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, either spray the foil with cooking spray or make sure the foil does not touch the cheese).
Bake the Lasagna:
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the lasagna is bubbly and the cheese is golden brown.
  3. Let the lasagna cool for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Garnish and Serve:
  • Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
  • Serve with a side salad and garlic bread for a complete meal.
