Potato and Ground Beef Casserole

A hearty and comforting casserole dish featuring layers of seasoned ground beef and sliced potatoes, baked to perfection with a creamy sauce and melted cheese.


  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)


  1. Preheat the Oven:
    Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the Ground Beef:
    In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
    Add the ground beef to the skillet. Season with salt, black pepper, paprika, thyme, and oregano. Cook until the beef is browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Prepare the Creamy Sauce:
    In a medium bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup and milk. Mix until smooth and set aside.
  4. Layer the Ingredients:
    In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer.
    Spread half of the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes.
    Pour half of the creamy soup mixture over the beef and potatoes.
    Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ground beef, and creamy soup mixture.
  5. Bake the Casserole:
    Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  6. Add Cheese and Finish Baking:
    Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the casserole.
    Return the dish to the oven and bake, uncovered, for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
  7. Garnish and Serve:
    Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
