Stuffed Cabbage Rolls Recipe

Stuffed cabbage rolls are a comforting, hearty dish made with tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a flavorful filling of ground meat, rice, and spices. They are often simmered in a rich tomato sauce, making them a perfect meal for any occasion.

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef or pork (or a mix)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

  1. Prepare the Cabbage:
  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Remove the core from the cabbage and carefully place the whole head into the boiling water.
  • Boil for 2-3 minutes until the outer leaves are tender and pliable. Remove the cabbage from the water and peel off the softened leaves. Repeat until you have about 12 large leaves. Set aside.
  1. Prepare the Filling:
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Mix until well combined.
  1. Stuff the Cabbage Leaves:
  • Lay a cabbage leaf flat and place about 2-3 tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center. Fold in the sides and roll up tightly from the bottom to enclose the filling. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
  1. Prepare the Tomato Sauce:
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the remaining chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until soft and fragrant.
  • Add the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with their juice), and broth to the skillet. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer.
  1. Cook the Cabbage Rolls:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Pour a thin layer of the tomato sauce into the bottom of a large baking dish.
  • Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, snugly side by side. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the rolls.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour, or until the rolls are cooked through and tender.
  1. Serve:
  • Remove from the oven and let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
