Stuffed Cabbage Rolls Recipe

Stuffed cabbage rolls are a classic comfort food, featuring tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory filling of ground meat, rice, and seasonings, all simmered in a rich tomato sauce. This dish is perfect for a hearty family dinner.

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water

  1. Prepare the Cabbage:
  • Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  • Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
  • Place the cabbage in the boiling water, reduce the heat, and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Gently remove the cabbage leaves one by one as they become tender. Set aside to cool.
  1. Prepare the Filling:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  1. Assemble the Rolls:
  • Lay a cabbage leaf flat on a clean surface. If the leaf is very large, cut it in half.
  • Place a generous spoonful of the meat mixture near the base of the leaf.
  • Fold the sides over the filling and roll up tightly from the base to the tip, securing the filling inside.
  • Repeat with remaining cabbage leaves and filling.
  1. Prepare the Sauce:
  • In a medium bowl, combine the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, brown sugar, lemon juice, and water. Mix well.
  1. Cook the Cabbage Rolls:
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture on the bottom of a large baking dish.
  • Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish, fitting them snugly in a single layer.
  • Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are well covered.
  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  1. Bake:
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 1.5 to 2 hours, until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.
  1. Serve:
  • Carefully remove the cabbage rolls from the baking dish and transfer to a serving platter.
  • Spoon some of the tomato sauce from the dish over the rolls before serving.
