Stuffed Cabbage Rolls Recipe

These hearty stuffed cabbage rolls are a comforting classic, perfect for a cozy family dinner or a gathering with friends. Tender cabbage leaves are filled with a savory mixture of ground meat, rice, and spices, then simmered in a flavorful tomato sauce until tender and delicious.

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef or a mixture of beef and pork
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 (14-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish with olive oil or non-stick spray.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head, then place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender and pliable. Remove the cabbage from the pot and drain. Carefully peel off the individual leaves and set them aside to cool.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, oregano, and basil. Mix until well combined.
  4. Take a cabbage leaf and place a small amount of the meat mixture (about 1/4 cup) in the center. Roll the leaf tightly, tucking in the sides as you go, to form a neat roll. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and meat mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix together the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, olive oil, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Pour a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish.
  7. Pour the remaining tomato sauce mixture over the top of the cabbage rolls, covering them evenly.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and tender.
  9. Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired. Enjoy!

These stuffed cabbage rolls are delicious served with mashed potatoes, crusty bread, or a simple green salad. They also freeze well, so you can make a big batch and enjoy them later!
